Tara and her brother Kyle are sent to stay with their estranged grandparents. May and Peter Folcroft seem warm and loving at first, and the house, hidden in the base of the mountains, is idyllic.
But strange things keep happening. Figures watch them through the fog. Objects move on their own. Tara begins to believe the unbelievable... that the house could be haunted.
When a storm cuts the phone line, May shifts from doting to obsessive. Tara and Kyle try to keep up the pretext of a happy family, but a forgotten journal and a locked room provide clues to the desperate lies and secrets entwined with the Folcrofts' legacy.
Something is horribly wrong with this family.

I have really enjoyed reading Darcy Coates. This is my fourth book by this author and I have liked them all! I Like them because they are a good suspenseful ghost story without resorting to graphic gore. I don't mind violence and a little bit of gore but stuff like "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" or "Saw" is less scary and just gross and disturbing. I like atmospheric ghost stories much better. To me they are creepier because there is still some mystery. So if that is what you are looking for then read this book (and all of Darcy Coates' books). I will say however that this is hardly "great literature" so if that is what you are looking for then I would go more for gothic horror and the classics, but they are great if you want something fast and fun and diverting. Which lets face it, most of us like at some point! ;)Product details

The Folcroft Ghosts eBook Darcy Coates Reviews
Not a bad story really, but very much mimicked the movie "The Visit" that came out in 2015. Only difference is with this book the mother is in a bad car accident, and the children are sent to grandparents they have never met. There was a twist that I didn't see coming, so that was a pleasant surprise. All-in-all not a bad story.
II nice read for a dark & stormy night! Well written, not a lot of blood & gore. Suspenseful, kept me reading. I enjoy a good ghost story & this one fit the bill. Don't care for a lot of hacking, blood, foul language, ( that's just me though). Scare me if you will as long as I don't have to keep a barf bag close by. LOL I like Darcy's style of writing & I will read more of her books!
This is the second book by Darcy Coates that I have read. Actually, I listened to the audio version and enjoyed the reader very much. She is wonderful at acting out all the parts and gives it a nice creepy quality. I actually had already started reading another book, found this one and had to finish it. I will go back to the previous book, but couldn't stop reading this one. Great characters, a wonderful old house, and a plot that is a real page turner. I love Ms. Coates' ghost stories. They are creepy and scary but never gruesome (only a tiny bit here and there- enough so that it's not juvenile), and kept me guessing. I thought I had it figured out, but was happy to find out I didn't. Yes, very satisfying!
Another great read by Darcy Coates. I have read all of her books with the exception of the two "romantic suspense" ones. I have thoroughly enjoyed every one. I look forward to another creepy "stay up late" thriller from this good author.
Really enjoyed this one. Think this is about the 4th. one I've read from this author & liked them all. Will read more of this author's books gladly.
Classic Darcy Coates novel where people, in this case two children, are cut off from the word in a house that appears to be haunted. Tara and Kyle's mother, estranged from her parents, is in a car accident and is in a coma. A friend of the family takes the two children into her home, although there is not enough room for everyone. When this friend discovers there are grandparents four hours away and the grandparents are willing to take them in, they are whisked away to grandparents they have never met. There is a reason they have never met, and that is a huge part of the story that almost leads to the deaths of the children. A truly good story, not the extreme horror of some of her works, but plenty of stressful moments before the end.
I read this book because I have been searching for a truely frightening tale! Sadly, this book is nowhere near a level of "terrifying", however I was very pleasantly surprised at how much I ended up LOVING it!
Assuming you read the synopsis, the main characters are children, so it makes sense that the author wouldn't get too graphic or horrifying with this particular tale. That being said, there are still countless thrilling moments and a few shockingly scary details that gave me chills to visualize!
There are a few predictable moments, but also some interesting and unexpected twists.
If you don't like being frightened, then this might not be the best option, because while it's got the feel of a light/mild horror story, there are some vividly imaginative spooky moments.
This book has a loveable cast, and an incredible author who has true talent for telling a highly entertaining story!
100% recommended for anyone interested in what I like to think of as a really fun horror story!
