What The Kitchen Told Me Powerful Lessons From The Kitchen For Life! David Thoreau 9781483448701 Books

From the first chapter, I was hooked by David's ability to pass on valuable lessons through his stories from cooking. It was easy to get caught up in reading the book, as the stories made it easy to turn the pages.
I loved the use of stories told in a similar tone as parables, to teach valuable life lessons.

"You see, we all get a list of ingredients, and everybody's list is different, but your job is to take your list and make something special with it."
I watch Chopped and other televised cooking shows, so this quote struck a chord with me and explains that it is a deliberate decision to make the best out of what life has given us.
He also taught that, just like ingredients, if you do not make use of what you have been given to work with, over time, they would become unusable.
There is no perfect time for getting anything done, so if we spend time doing everything else, but that which we should be doing, we would end up with the important things not being taken care of.

Emphasizing the need to follow tried and tested recipes while cooking, the book taught that there is no need learning the hard way, if it were possible to follow a proven method of working towards beneficial goals.
David shares the need to put God first, decide on a goal, then write down the expected outcome and timeline and work with every available resources, in order to achieve this goal.

David showed that lessons could be learnt even in adverse conditions. When he spoke about his travel to various parts of the world, I looked forward to reading about some of these experiences.
I wasn't disappointed reading about his jungle cooking experiences in Basra, Iraq. This was a clear application of improvisation and creativity, against all odds. He emphasied the need to make the best of every situation.

Pests are very annoying and are everywhere, so it made perfect sense that a telling of life in the kitchen would include them. Effective pest management in the kitchen was used to illustrate the need to eliminate any negativity that distracts you from your set goals.

"You are what you eat" is a quote most of us are familiar with, especially where it concerns weightloss efforts. In this book, it is used to to explain that your relationships define you, so you have to be intentional about what feeds your dream. Relationships are critical to one's success or failure, so choosing the right ones is important to realising or marring one's dreams.

By the time I got to the final chapter, I realised that the author had saved the best for last. This chapter was an encore-inducing one, full of stories that told of a soul determined not to be conquered by adversities. This chapter told of the birth of a hustler who knew exactly where he wanted to be and fought to get there. With an admirable tenacity, the writer got past racism and a deliberate attempt to keep him down.

I would easily recommend this book to people, as David made it easy on visualise his experiences. Reading the book, I was in each kitchen he was narrating at any point. It was easy to relate to his experiences as he used simplified language and a friendly tone throught the book.
In the middle of a busy schedule, the book held my attention and was a page-turner. Great job!

David tells the story of transformation from a kid in the hood with hopes for a better life to a new reality that he achieved using the wisdom he earned during his career as a chef. This is an excellent story of a real life success and how to achieve that success , told in play in English
Very creative and inspiring story of how a man made a good life for himself, on his own terms. The analogy of the kitchen is well used by him. Worth reading.
Great story line and lots of great advice, written in easy to read manner. I had the privilege of attending college with David and I believe I was one he would "mack food" from although I didn't know it at the time. David has always been a great find with words that uplift and encourage, this book is wonderful collecrion of truths; real recongnizes real.
Beautifully written! This book made me laugh, cry, and evaluate how I look at situations in my life. Leave no page unturned or you may just miss the very lesson that you are in need of! This book is what it says it is full of "powerful lessons". It's authenticity and organic feel will leave you with an urgency for more! I cannot wait to read what comes next from this powerful author from my hometown. You Rock David!
This was a very easy read written in a conversational style that kept me engaged and wanting more. The stories used throughout the book are very vivid and helps the reader to understand the concepts being presented. The concepts are very relevant and easy to adopt to see change in your life. “I’m in charge of me!”
This is a book you should read with a highlighter. What the Kitchen Told Me is one of the most practical motivational books I've ever read. David Thoreau applies simple lessons from the kitchen to major motivational concepts. Each example and experience shared in this book are easy to follow and simple to apply. I never realize how many lessons are taught through food. Food is life, and life can be improved through the lessons of the kitchen. An absolute must read for anyone looking to make a positive change in their life!
Eric Matthews, Author of "Forever Caterpillar"
What the Kitchen Told Me is definitely a "MUST READ!" The manner in which the dynamic lessons are presented, are innovative and captivating to say the least. This book left me not only thinking, but also left me craving more. You don't have to be a Soldier or a Chef to relate to and apply the lessons outlined. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories, and could picture each scenario so vividly, from the books description, that I was engulfed and completely lost (in a good way) in this book. This book is one that warrants periodic "re-reads," to really glean the lessons there-in. Bravo Mr. Thoreau...what a great read!
